What Is a Funding Pitch Deck and How Do You Create a Great One?

What Is a Funding Pitch Deck?

In short, a funding pitch deck is a short presentation that a founder gives to an investor. It contains the information investors need about your company: your business plan, background details about your company, details on your products or services, your goals and strategies, your revenue plan, financial projections, and more.

Your business idea might be a great one, but today’s competitive landscape means you need to spark interest with a great investor pitch deck.

The right funding pitch deck helps you get the funding you need when you need it. It’s critical for any business to grow and achieve its goals. So, what’s included in a good pitch deck? There’s a lot of information that should be a part of your presentation and slide deck when pitching to investors.

What Is Included in a Funding Pitch Deck?

Funding pitch decks, by definition, include key information. That makes sense. Potential investors need to know about your business. They won’t invest in a company without knowing what they’re getting into. •  Therefore, you need to include the details that matter to investors.

Here’s what every funding pitch deck should include:

Don’t just give information about your product or service; instead, explain why it matters. Why does the problem you’re solving exist? Why should it be solved? What is your solution, and why is your company the one to solve it?

As mentioned, it’s not enough to have found a market opportunity; you also need to show that you are the one who can solve the problem. What differentiates you from other companies in the field? How are you uniquely positioned to succeed?

A market is a group of people who share similar characteristics. You’ll need to specifically note to which market you are directing your product or service. What size is this market? How will you find success with them?

Outline how your product or service will be advertised and sold to your target market. This means not only explaining what marketing tactics you’re running or have in mind, but you should also detail why this strategy will be effective (and more effective than the competition’s).

This requires hard numbers and facts. How are you going to make money? What is your plan for scaling the company? In what ways will investor funding help you achieve these goals?

To validate your business model, explain any traction you’ve had in your market. Metrics include your annual revenue, the number of sales you’ve made or clients you’ve served, company profit margins, realistic future predictions, and anything else that shows you’re a stable business getting traction and following the right path.

Who works with you? Who is on your management team? What experience do your team members have? What skills and capabilities do you have that make you the right choice to solve the problem you’ve presented? Put this information into a team slide that shows off the skills and experience of those working with you.

This involves more hard numbers. Whether you’re talking to Silicon Valley investors or anyone else, they’ll want to know where you stand financially. Include numbers that show your company’s financial health. This means income statements, projected growth details, and more.

This is important. Often companies go into a presentation packed with information, but they forget to conclude with next steps. What are you asking for from the investors? Why do you need funding? How will you spend it, and how will it benefit the company?

Do Pitch Decks Need a Fund Page?

As mentioned, a fund page is a critical part of a presentation, but it’s one often forgotten. Tell your story and explain your business, but remember that the reason you’re here is to secure funding for your company.

How you present your “ask” is important as well. It may make sense to break down how the funding will be used in a chart which might show what percentages will go toward research, marketing, product development, etc. Depending on your business, it may also be a good idea to explain how the money will be distributed over time and how this will affect the business.

Each company is different and has its own needs. The key is to be clear and concise. Your numbers should be understandable at a glance. Remember, you likely won’t have much time with the venture capital firms or investors. Use it wisely.

Make sure to provide the information they need in an interesting and convincing manner. Ending with a fund page shows that you have a specific request in mind. Being clear with your facts and your ask not only shows you’re prepared, but it also demonstrates to the investors that you respect their time.

Is a Seed Funding Pitch Deck Different from Series A?

Seed funding is often needed when a company is just starting out. This is your initial capital, and it’s usually designed to get your company to the point of profitability. In many cases, the investors involved at this point will want equity in the company.

After the seed funding round, the next round is Series A. At this point, you likely have a working product or service, and your business will have shown progress and the potential to grow and generate more revenue.

Your funding pitch deck will be different in either situation. Typically, seed pitch decks are shorter and more lightweight. Your business hasn’t achieved much yet, so the pitch is more about your idea, your team, and what you bring to the table. A lot of things will change for your business in the early stage, so the goal of the pitch deck is to show investors what problem exists, how you’re going to solve it, and the size of the potential market.

Of course, you’ll still have to explain how you will use the investment money, how you have arrived at your valuation, and where the funding will take you.

When it comes to Series A funding, you’ll need a more detailed pitch deck containing more facts, data, and details. This is also your opportunity to show that your business is scalable. Investors will want to see that it can grow. Is your success repeatable? Will customers keep coming back, or will you be able to attract new ones? Can you keep growing?

Again, you’ll definitely need to explain why you need funding, how you will spend it, and how it will help your business. Include projections for the next 18-24 months if you have them. This shows stability and that you have a strong plan for future success. 

Crafting a Perfect Pitch Deck

A pitch deck contains a lot of information, but it needs more than that. You’re not going to win over many investors with pages and pages of facts and figures.

Not only do you want to provide important information and spark interest in your company, but you also need to make sure that the deck is easy to read, scan, and digest. Yes, it’s important to be thorough and to provide details, but you need to do so in a straightforward, clear, concise, and entertaining way in the limited amount of time you have to deliver your presentation. Your pitch should convince them that your company is worth investing in. Facts and figures aren’t the only aspects of a good pitch deck.

The structure of your presentation matters.

It’s important to tell your startup story in the deck. While potential investors obviously care about numbers and money, someone’s tale may also pique their interest. It’s usually best to use a narrative format. Tell the venture capitalist or business investor a story. Your business plan or business model might be sound, but you’ll need to do some selling to the investors as well. You can’t just throw them a stack of facts.

No matter how good your numbers are, remember that you’re still talking to human beings. They want to be convinced, so you’ll need to convince them.

Your business is here to solve a problem. Don’t just explain the problem and your solution; tell them a story about why this matters to you and why your company is the one they should trust to solve that problem.

How did you discover that the problem exists? Why did you want to solve it? What sets you apart from anyone else who is trying to tackle the same thing? Demonstrating your passion and commitment to the issue won’t just sell investors on your company, it will also sell them on your ability to convince others as well. They want to know that you have what it takes to be successful, after all.

Don’t underestimate the value of effective storytelling. Your funding pitch deck is crucial, but so is your overall presentation. How you speak, what you say, and how you work to sell yourself and convince the investors may make the difference between getting the funding you need and leaving empty-handed.
